Two and a half years ago, Nigerian atheist Mubarak Bala got involved in a discussion about life and death. As part of that discussion, Bala wrote a post on Facebook saying that, “you have no life after this one. You have been dead before, long before you were born, billions of years of death.”
In response to this Facebook post, a State Police Commissioner had Bala arrested. Bala was charged with the criminal offense of causing a public disturbance. Prosecutors claimed that Bala’s “provocative and annoying” words were blasphemous because they denied the religious belief in the eternal life.
In April 5 this year, Mubarak Bala was sentenced to 24 years in prison. He is seeking appeal.
Facebook has taken no action to defend its Nigerian users from prosecution for blasphemy.
To this date, this no evidence that death can be survived.
