Exodus 20:3-4 (NIV): “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”
Brothers and sisters in Christ, today I want to talk about a pervasive issue in our modern lives—a false idol that many of us carry in our pockets and purses. This idol demands our attention, consumes our time, and distracts us from our relationship with God. I am speaking of our smartphones, which, for many, have become as alluring and demanding as the ancient god Baal.
Today, we might not bow down to statues or offer sacrifices to idols, but idolatry is still very much alive. Our smartphones have become modern-day idols, demanding our constant attention and devotion. How often do we find ourselves checking our phones during meals, conversations, and even during church services? How much time do we spend scrolling through social media, watching videos, and playing games, compared to the time we spend in prayer, reading the Bible?
The Bible warns us against placing anything before our devotion to God. In Matthew 6:24, Jesus says, “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” While Jesus was speaking about money, the principle applies to anything that takes precedence over our relationship with God.
Brothers and sisters, let us remember that our ultimate devotion belongs to God alone. Let us not allow the false idol of the smartphone to take the place of our true worship. By recognizing the problem, setting boundaries, and prioritizing our spiritual lives, we can turn away from this modern-day Baal and return to a deeper, more fulfilling relationship with our Creator.
But lo! You’re still here, reading this on a smartphone!
Sinner! Sinner!
You’re going to Hell! Burn, baby, burn!
Throw your smartphone in the garbage right now! It’s the technology of Satan!
Boo!
What are you still doing here, reading this, sinner?
